Gender and Women Studies

The Department of Gender and Women’s Studies at UW–Madison is one of the oldest and most respected departments of its kind in the country. Last year, we celebrated our 50th anniversary! We provide tangible preparation for our students’ professional futures. Our interdisciplinary curriculum prepares students for continuing graduate and professional education, as well as employment in diverse fields, from marketing to social work to law. A gender and women’s studies education also helps students understand their place in the world. Our classrooms serve as potent sites for the production of knowledge and insight, where students look beyond their own perspectives to understand the lives of other people.

Our students are engaged in classes, research, internships, and other activities that enhance their experience at the UW and that prepare them for rewarding, curious, and engaged lives after they graduate. Currently, we have nearly 100 students majoring in gender and women’s studies and nearly 400 students completing their certificate in gender and women’s studies or LGBTQ studies.
