Every year, the Department of English offers more than 400 classes, teaches more than 10,000 students, and trains 50 writing fellows to be student instructors in courses across campus. Badgers graduating from the Department of English go on to work in publishing, tech, education, public health, law, public service, business, and more. When you make a gift in support of UW–Madison’s Department of English, you’re helping students see the power of words in their lives and in the world around them, and you’re supporting teachers who help them take that power beyond the classroom every day.
How Students See Your Generosity
As one of our 2025 graduates wrote in a recent exit survey, “The English department does such a remarkable job fostering community, encouraging students to ask big questions, and rewarding thoughtful work. As just one example of that, I know of no department with such robust writing prizes and scholarships.”
Your gifts allow us to offer writing prizes and scholarships, bring guest speakers into the classroom and take students into local communities, support student internships with nonprofit organizations and community groups, help fund travel so students can present at professional conferences, and offer paid research training and mentorship.
Keep Our Story Going
Your generosity ensures that the Department of English can continue to instruct, inspire, innovate, and support the next generation of students.
