Committed to bringing academic research to the broadest possible audience, the Department of African American Studies believes the deepest understanding of the complex reality of race in America requires an interdisciplinary approach. Within and beyond the walls of the university, our studies draw on history, political theory, music history, art history, and sociology to develop skills in research, writing, and critical inquiry. Our department aims to recognize the collective power of partnerships in organizing to actively seek growth and deliberate change within our society.
How your gifts make an impact
The benevolence of our donors allows the department to aid our students, faculty, and staff in excelling in their field via awards, travel support, guest lectures, and the purchase of equipment. Gifts will be used to provide additional funding for recruitment to our master’s degree program and to support graduate students, most of whom come from underrepresented groups and families with limited resources. Specifically, our students will be assisted through project assistantships, student research trips, and conference participation.
Why we need your support
Our program began as an outgrowth of student concern for relevance in higher education in 1969. Our work continues to be essential to campus, the Madison community, and the nation as we conduct public humanities research, engage deeply with the community, and foster social activism.
Gifts made in support of the Department of African American Studies will be contributed to Department of Afro-American Studies Fund at the University of Wisconsin Foundation.
