Committed to bringing academic research to the broadest possible audience, the Department of African American Studies believes the deepest understanding of the complex reality of race in America requires an interdisciplinary approach. Within and beyond the walls of the university, our studies draw on Black history, political theory, music history, art history, and sociology to develop skills in research, writing, and critical inquiry. Our department aims to recognize the collective power of partnerships in organizing to actively seek growth and deliberate change within our society.
How your gifts make an impact
The generosity of our donors allows the department to aid our students, faculty, and staff in excelling in their field via awards, travel support, guest lectures, and the purchasing of equipment. Gifts will be used to provide additional funding for recruitment to our master’s degree program and to support graduate students, most of whom come from underrepresented groups and families with limited resources. Gifts also help bolster resources for the SoulFolk Collective, our new research lab. Donations will allow student research fellows to conduct and disseminate their qualitative research.
Why we need your support
Our program began in 1969 as an outgrowth of student concern for Black relevance in higher education. Our work continues to be essential to campus, the Madison community, and the nation as we conduct public humanities research, engage deeply with the community, and foster social activism.
